Verbatim Meeting Report
Session: conc-Elise260602-FULL--14-05-53
Date: June 2, 2026
Participants: Mia (Speaker B) · Élise, Concordia Recruiter — Undergraduate Admissions (Speaker A)
[Élise] Hi, Guillaume, can you hear me? [Mia] Yes. Yeah. Yes. [Élise] Hi. How are you? [Mia] Good, you good? Sorry for being late. I was absorbed in my— [Élise] Oh, all good, all good. So, how can I help you? Thanks for rescheduling. [Mia] Yeah, no problem. I understand what it is to be sick. I was going to have— I had— but I'm curious first, you said something like your questions were— I don't know. You said that— because I tried to remember the question that I asked you when I filled the form or something, but I couldn't find them. [Élise] Yeah— you talked about the First People Studies program, and integrating AI and that kind of stuff. And so, yeah— if we weren't able to reschedule, I'm actually off the next two weeks on vacation. So if we weren't able to reschedule, I was going to suggest meeting the program director. I mean, you can also always still reach out to him. He's very nice, but it's just good to have that contact specifically. [Mia] Yeah, and I kind of did— I call that a professional outreach. But he's a very interesting person, honestly. It fits with what I'm interested in— the background that I have in visual effects and cinema and things like that. I worked on two or three movies, I don't remember exactly. But yeah, somehow it's very confronting to me because I really love spending time with Indigenous people. I've been a fire keeper at the Sundance for three years. [Élise] That's nice. [Mia] It makes me— I was saying that immediately because it makes you not a tourist interested in just surfacing Indigenous people or something. Not that it's not okay, but— you know, I'm interested in something. You might be capable of helping me know what's available in terms of the courses and the— [Élise] Yeah, no, for sure. Were you looking to do a full-on degree? I imagine it might be your second degree in this case? [Mia] Honestly— the pandemic— I was doing a master in arts at another university, but I was really traumatized by the pandemic. I think I'm not the only one, but it makes me rethink everything. And for sure, I want to include— if I'm picturing myself in a career, I will work with Indigenous communities. I'm already in— I have a good relationship with the community that revolves around the Sundance— with the Innu people on the east. I don't know if it's there because I'm starting to create relationships with other people— I don't know exactly where they are because we do talking circles on the internet, but they're located basically in the United States at multiple places. And Concordia really popped out in terms of the most relevant close place to study or to get something. I know that one thing with technology and AI that I've worked on is going on the land. And this land-based— I think it was land-based Indigenous land-based learning or something— I was attracted to this because when I go on the land it's— it's a deep— [Élise] You froze. [Mia] Whoops. Maybe— oh, I did. Oh, did you hear what I said or—? [Élise] Oh, there you go. It's good now. [Mia] Yeah. [Élise] It could be my internet. Yeah, okay, yes. Um, yeah, there's a land-based program. So there are two main programs that probably interest you and they have different pros and cons. One is the one you mentioned— the micro program, the land-based micro program. So this could be a good starting point because it's not a full-on bachelor's degree. And if you do really enjoy it and want to continue on, you can transfer those credits from the micro program to the bachelors. So that's why it could be a really good starting point. I think it's also, given your interests and experiences, it's a bit more hands-on. And so that could be fun as well. I'll send you— so you have the information— be able to access the chat, I think. So that would be the link for the land-based program. And we still are accepting applications. The deadline is August 1st for that program. So that's helpful as well, just logistically. And then the BA is kind of like a step above, where you'd be completing 42 credits in First People Studies. And so that would lead to a second bachelors for you in your case. But like I said, what's nice is you could potentially start in the micro program and then from there kind of stem into transferring to the bachelors if that's something you want to do. The other thing that I had checked out for you— I'll send in the chat— given your interests that you outlined: we do have an AI research institute. And there are two professors that perhaps might be of interest to you. I'll link their names too in the chat. They do AI and Indigenous research. And so that might be something— if you were to start in a program or start at Concordia— you could reach out to these professors and see if they're doing anything interesting that you'd like to work on. Sometimes our courses are quite flexible. Like if you wanted to incorporate a specific type of research project, working with a professor, sometimes there's some leeway for that kind of stuff as well. So those were the two that kind of stood out in terms of your interests and what they're currently doing. [Mia] You said some leeway? [Élise] Yeah, so like— not necessarily in the micro program because it's only nine credits, it's very specific the classes that you take. But in the BA sometimes you could take a 400-level class and it be just a research-based class. And that's working on a specific research project with a professor. So perhaps one of those two professors, or somebody else from the department. But that's a course you could take in a bachelor's degree. [Mia] Okay, so working with a professor is more at the bachelor degree and not necessarily the land-based micro program. [Élise] Exactly. So the micro program curriculum— the courses you're taking, you'll see on the link— they're already set. The micro programs that we offer are very strict in the classes they have. So in your case, it would just be four classes. And it's, as I said, much more land-based and hands-on than at the research level. Whereas the Bachelor of Arts allows students to delve a bit more in depth in terms of research. But for you it's really like— there's an introductory course, which would probably be interesting, but you'd probably have some knowledge already. And then there's two field studies— kind of like internships that are land-based. And then there's a final course which is a seminar-based class tying it all in together. And that's the micro program. That's all you would be taking in that specific program. [Mia] Okay, I'm just finishing saving the links you gave me. It's— it's a lot of ingest. Okay, so is it possible there are twice the same link? Oh no, it shows me— [Élise] The two names might be linked to the research page, but there are essentially three pages: the micro program, the Bachelor of Arts, and then the research page. [Mia] Okay. So I'm just going to— and I was— by, you know, I didn't know if we would have our meeting today, but I started to draft something that I could write to the program director. Given that— by not necessarily having similar interests, but you know, his profile is very interesting. So I was wondering— I don't know what question to ask, in a way. But I haven't found— I'm going to listen to his movie that he did. Because one project that interested me in the Innu community was— you know, they want to create movies for their communities, but what happens is— the money that people get— basically nobody is capable of handling the technical aspect of creating a movie. Therefore it's almost always Caucasian people who do movies about Indigenous people. And some of the elders— they want that in the community, to be able to be autonomous doing cinema and movies. And I'm attracted to the question: how could I facilitate that? And probably there's something in the programs that could lead me to this. [Élise] Yeah, I think that's really great. And I think something like that is very specific. And so reaching out to the director in that case— again, because he does have similar interests— I think that would be very helpful. I don't know— there isn't a graduate program specifically for First People Studies, but there are different options at Concordia in terms of grad level which might fit more into that. We have— it's called the INDI. It's an individualized program. So somebody like you who has a very specific idea of what they want, but we don't have a specific program that encompasses it— you essentially create your own program. And there's one called HUMA, which is basically the humanities graduate program. Again, a bit more structured than the individualized one, but same idea— you're doing a topic within the humanities, and there's a lot of flexibility as to what that topic is and who your supervisors are and that kind of stuff. So if the graduate program sounds a bit more of what you're looking for, those two could potentially be options. Depending on again what your interest is. But Nicola, the director, might be able to steer you a bit better in terms of which would be a better option for you. [Mia] Okay. So basically I can approach him with— there are two ways to create your own program— I'd like to speak with you about that, or something? [Élise] Yeah, so at the grad level, if you want to talk specifically about those programs— this is my colleague, she does the graduate programs— the two programs are called the INDI and HUMA. Those are the abbreviations. So the individualized and the humanities option as well. [Mia] The INDI like I-N-D-I? [Élise] Yeah, INDI. Short for individualized program. And HUMA, obviously, humanities. [Mia] Okay. That's a very interesting way to name it. Okay, I'm going to copy this address. [Élise] Yes. I mean, in terms of what you're looking for and your interests— depending on the level you want to be doing, there's different options. So we have the micro program if it's just a really short, hands-on, basic program. If you want to delve more into the different topics, the BA. But if you really want to do that graduate-level, specific-type project, then either of those could potentially be good matches. [Mia] That's great. I don't know what else— so what would you suggest next? Would you suggest that I contact this FAS grad programs— [Élise] Yeah, I think you could reach out to her and ask about the INDI and HUMA a bit more. I'm at the undergrad level, so I don't have too much knowledge. But you can also simultaneously reach out to Nicola and see what his feedback is and what he thinks as well. [Mia] All right. Sounds like I got a plan. [Élise] All right, awesome. Well, I'm glad I could help a little bit. [Mia] Yeah, thank you. [Élise] No problem. Have a great day. [Mia] You too. Bye. [Élise] Bye.
What Came Out of This
Three program paths were surfaced: the Land-Based Micro Program (9 credits, 4 courses, hands-on field studies, deadline August 1st, credits transferable to BA), the BA in First People Studies (42 credits, allows 400-level research courses with a professor), and two self-directed grad options — INDI (individualized program) and HUMA (humanities graduate program). The recruiter's name appears to have been called "Élise" based on the filename, and she flagged two unnamed professors at Concordia's AI research institute doing AI + Indigenous research work.[1]
Your own angle — facilitating Indigenous community cinema autonomy (specifically Innu community) — maps cleanly onto the program director Nicola's profile and is a strong thesis hook for either grad program.[1]
Agent Work Queue
These are the implied next actions your agents should prepare:
- Retrieve the 3 links sent by Élise in chat: land-based micro program page, BA in First People Studies page, and Concordia AI Research Institute faculty page — scrape and archive
- Identify the two AI + Indigenous professors at Concordia's research institute — find names, current projects, and contact info
- Find Nicola (program director) — full name, email, faculty page, his film(s) — and draft outreach email anchored on the Innu community cinema sovereignty angle
- Contact the FAS grad programs coordinator (Élise's colleague) — draft inquiry about INDI and HUMA program requirements, prerequisites, and supervisor matching
- Deadline flag: August 1st application deadline for the land-based micro program — assess if applying in parallel while pursuing grad contact is worth doing
- Pull prior research from Notion / Project Chimera file on Concordia institutional mapping and cross-reference with what surfaced today[2]
